What is tourism and hospitality studies?

Tourism and Hospitality Management is a multidisciplinary field of study with the purpose of preparing people with the expertise, commitment, and skills for management, marketing, and operations positions in the expanding industry that provides food, accommodations, and tourism services to people away from home. As a field of study, Tourism and Hospitality Management is interdisciplinary. It draws upon a wide range of basic disciplines to provide the fundamental knowledge and skills that are required to fulfil the diverse demands placed upon individuals in management positions within the Hospitality industry. Recognising that the individual educated for today is soon out of date, the academic emphasis of the program is on principles, analytical tools, processes, and

systems. These change relatively slowly. However, it is recognised that at least a minimal exposure to the skills and knowledge which make up the present state of the art is necessary to understand the principles. Likewise, it is recognised that the students in the program are composites of many talents, and that in Tourism and Hospitality, pure academic ability cannot predict professional success. Thus, the program has as a basic objective the presentation of an academic curriculum to develop management capability through interdisciplinary subject exposure, problem identification, basic concepts, decision making, theory, and management application.

This qualification is designed for students wanting to pursue a career in the Tourism Industry. A career in tourism is demanding and requires people with good interpersonal and communication skills, a dedication to quality and good service.
It is aimed primarily at giving the learner technical, theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge and workplace knowledge and skills required in their chosen occupational/vocational area.
The design of the full qualification is such that if taken sequentially with related N part courses i.e. N4+N5+N6, it enables learners to progressively obtain the National N Diploma once the required practical work component of either 18 months is completed.

    ASSESSMENTS


    Students are to submit assessments as per HC College’s academic plan. These assessment will constitute a semester mark. A 40% semester mark must be obtained to gain access to the external examinations.
    These external examinations are set by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and are written during June and November of each year. The pass mark is 40% per subject for N4-N5 levels.
    • NB: Students must attend 80% of their classes in order to qualify to write the examinations
    • NB: All examinations for Full Time and Part Time Students are written at the HC College Blouberg Campus in Cape Town

    CERTIFICATION


    Upon successful completion of all Formative and Summative Assessments and the verification process of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), you will be awarded the National Certificate: Tourism at each level (N4, N5, N6). Once you have completed 18 months of practical experience, you will then be awarded the National N Diploma NQF Level 6 (SAQA ID 90674) issued by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). In order to qualify for a National N Diploma in Tourism, a candidate must obtain the following results for the N6 level:

  • Travel Services N6: 70%
  • Tourism Communication N6: 50%
  • Tourist Destinations N6: 50%
  • Office Procedures N6: 50 %
  • COURSE FEE


    HC College has an all-inclusive course fee which includes study material and exam fees. Students have the option of paying the course fee in full upfront or opting for the 50% deposit payment plus instalment plan with 0% interest.

    The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO)


    The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) is a Quality Council established in 2010 in terms of the Skills Development Act. Its role is to oversee the design, implementation, assessment and certification of occupational qualifications on the Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework (OQSF). The QCTO is one of three Quality Councils (QCs) responsible for a part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Collectively, the Quality Councils and the South African Qualifications Authority (whose role is to advance the objectives of the NQF and oversee its development and implementation), all work for the good of both learners and employers. Their vision is to qualify a skilled and capable workforce; our mission is to effectively and efficiently manage the occupational qualifications sub-framework in order to set standards, develop and quality assure national occupational qualifications for all who want a trade or occupation and, where appropriate, professions. HC College is a registered Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Examination Centre (no. 0199992104) for all of the Nated Programmes (N4 - N6).

    The Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) is one of the UK’s leading professional membership and awarding body.
